Meet Our Optometrists

 

Dr. Bruce V. Gustafson, Optometrist

Dr Gustafson
Dr. Bruce Gustafson specializes in general optometry and has earned a reputation for
providing patients with leading-edge technology and expertise in contact lenses. He specializes in treating low vision and dry eyes.

He graduated from Illinois College of Optometry and has been in Faribault since 1978, after purchasing the long-standing practice of Dr. Mark McKeeby. In November 2003, he joined the Richie Eye Clinic.

He is involved in and has served on boards of various organizations including his church, Faribault
Exchange Club, Rice County Community Corrections, Faribault United Way and Faribault Gymnastics
Club. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Gustafson has given seminars on low vision and other aspects of
optometry.

Dr. Gustafson is married to Bonnie and has three daughters, two sons-in-law and three grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with family, and in his spare time it's cars, motorcycles, traveling and CrossFit.


Dr. Murray H. Hanson, Optometrist

Dr. Hanson
After earning his Bachelor of Arts from Concordia College, Moorhead, Dr. Hanson went on to pursue his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Optometry at Southern California College of Optometry. Dr. Hanson began seeing patients in Faribault in 1989 and purchased Dr. Roy Anderson's practice in 1993 before joining Richie Eye Clinic in 2003.

Dr. Hanson specializes in family eye care and contact lenses as well as geriatric eye care. In addition to seeing patients at Richie Eye Clinic, Dr. Hanson also visits area nursing homes and assisted living facilities on a regular basis.
These include St. Lucas, Pleasant Manor, Pleasant View, Traditions of Waterville and Montgomery, Kenyon Sunset Home/Gunderson Gardens, Medford Senior Care, New Perspective Senior Living, Central Health Care-LeCenter, Milestone Senior Living, and Faribault Senior Living.
Dr. Hanson and his wife Kristi have a daughter Kamryn, a son Jackson and his wife Mary, and a granddaughter Eleanor. His interests include photography, reading, golfing and weight training/exercising.


Dr. David M. Malmanger, Optometrist

Dr. Malmanger
Dr. David Malmanger was born and raised in Minnesota and has over 25 years
experience in Optometry. After working with Eye Care Associates in Faribault,
he joined Richie Eye Clinic in 2011.

He earned his undergraduate degree from North Dakota State University and
received his Doctorate in Optometry from Pacific University College of
Optometry in Oregon. His internship in diagnosis and treatment of visual
disorders related to children was completed at the State University of New
York, College of Optometry, and his internship in diagnosis and management
of systemic-ocular disease was completed at the Portland Optometric Clinic in Oregon.

Dr. Misty J. Piller, Optometrist

Dr. Misty (Purfeerst) Piller, a Faribault native, graduated Magna Cum Laude from North Dakota State and Cum Laude from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. She joined
Richie Eye Clinic in 2010.

Her areas of interest include: glaucoma, pediatrics, dry eye, macular degeneration, urgent care (red eyes, injuries, etc), contact lenses and primary care optometry.

She has served as Rice County 4-H Adult Leader and Assistant General Livestock Judging Coach for Rice
County 4-H, and has been involved with Health Finders Board of Directors and Faribault's Future.
Dr. Piller's hobbies include travel, sports, and spending time with family and friends. She lives in Faribault with her husband Jake.


Dr. Abigail Richie, Optometrist

Dr. Richie graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, MN where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology. While there she conducted molecular genetic research. She then obtained her Doctorate in Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL.

While in school Dr Richie achieved clinical honors in her externship rotations in the treatment of ocular disease/primary care at the Clement J Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI, Fitting Specialty contact lenses at Chicago Cornea Consultants in Chicago, IL, and in pediatrics and binocular vision at Hellerstein and Brenner Vision in Denver, Co.

Dr. Richie’s optometric interests include pediatrics and patients that struggle with double vision or eyestrain. Dr. Richie feels strongly that every child should have a comprehensive eye exam before starting school and encourages those who have children who avoid reading to come in for an eye exam.

Dr Richie’s professional memberships and affiliations include the Minnesota Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Richie currently resides in NE Minneapolis where she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, training for half marathons, and despite her love for Minnesota, still cheers for the Green Bay Packers.


Dr. Angella Bonde Schaefer, Optometrist

Dr. Angella (Bonde) Schaefer grew up in the country outside the small town of Nerstrand, MN with her parents and two older brothers she graduated from Faribault High School. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry. She received her Doctorate in Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Schaefer’s formal training included clinical rotations at Kohake, Deutscher, and Hefner in Topeka, KS, Providence VA Medical Center in Providence, RI, Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, IL and EyeCare Associates in Fargo, ND. Dr. Schaefer practiced in Carrington, ND prior to joining Richie Eye Clinic in 2017.

Her areas of interest include: pediatrics, dry eye, contact lenses, glaucoma, low vision, urgent care visits and primary care optometry.

Dr. Schaefer and her husband Michael have a daughter Marcella and a dog LuLu. Her interests include spending time with family and friends, gardening, baking, reading and enjoying outdoors. Dr. Schaefer is looking forward to being an advocate for healthy eyes and clear vision for the Faribault community.
